Now that many of us are suffering from the crippling personal guilt of not attending SDCC and making each other promise to go next year (as we’ve done before), we can try to feel whole again with the over load of news and videos that came out of it. We swear we could have been able to to tell it was Matt Smith under that mask.
Happy birthday, Cleveland! Fittingly, for Cleveland’s birthday week, there are plenty of awesome events to celebrate our favorite city.
Wednesday brings you the third installation of Ohio City Writers – Telling Stories in Comic Books workshop for kids. This week covers creating the panels and covers for the short comic books. Again, we highly suggest getting your children involved in this.
We encourage everyone to join us Friday for GeekCLE Show and Tell #2 taking place at the Bottle House Brewing Company. Not only will you meet great people and be able to enjoy locally brewed beer and ginger beer cocktails, the have some great pinball machines. The Shadow Pinball featuring Alec Baldwin? Yea.
Carol & John’s Comic Shop is having their Carol and John’s Superman Day on Saturday. They have a massive array of local artists that have created original Superman art featuring Cleveland that you can enter a raffle to take home with you. Proceeds are going to the women rescued from Seymour Avenue. There are plenty of other prizes and special sales that you can partake in at the shop.
Geekfest at Akron-Summit County Public Library is also happening on Saturday. There will be activities for children, teens, and adults, with local comic artists showing original works, fun photo-ops, a selection of Sci-Fi classics being screened and prizes.
Saturday marks the end of the CRUNCHY: Sugary Cartoon Art for Big Kids Art Exhibit at Waterloo Arts. Cleveland’s contributions to the comics world can no longer be ignored, and Arts Collinwood is set to honor those contributions, alongside Cleveland’s current vibrant comics scene. The show includes artists such as Aaron Koonce, Gary Dumm, derf Backderf, Scott Radke and tons more. The show’s closing night will include a Superman Film Fest with 1940′s Superman cartoons and a Superman fan film made by local filmmaker Johnny Wu.
For Pez Collectors, this is your week. From Wedesday through Saturday, Pezamania, the world’s largest gathering of PEZ collectors, is taking place at the Holiday Inn in Independence. Spend your weekend with an international group of PEZ collectors, PEZ dealers, and PEZ authors.
On Sunday, anime fans are invited to the The Cleveland Museum of Art for a showing of From Up on Poppy Hill, Goro Miyazaki’s animated feature about a group of high school students try to save a mansion from demolition.
This week in movies brings you the The Wolverine which maybe you’re excited about and maybe it makes you grumpy, but you know you’ll still see it. It’s got that lethal samurai steel and classic Hugh Jackman testing his vocal chords and neck. Seriously, he almost broke his neck on set.
