We’re finally getting down to it, 9 days until the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who episode “The Day of the Doctor”. Ten and Eleven together, Rose Tyler, John Hurt, Daleks, Zygons… and have you seen the second trailer?
Now, hopefully you all have a wonderfully planned out way to celebrate this glory, but if you have not, I’m here to help. Allons-y!
To kick things off, this Saturday, the 16th at 5pm, the Doctor Who Society of Cleveland is hosting a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Party at the American Legion Hall in Newburgh Heights. This 21 & over party will featuring the TARDIS and guest bartenders, the 2nd, 4th, 9th, 10th and 11th Doctors as well as the John Hurt Doctor, working the cash bar (attendees can also BYOB). Join in a DW themed potluck (rumors suggest a possible “Cassandra” lasagna!) and watch past episodes on multiple screens. The hosts will be raffling off tickets to see the anniversary episode in theaters as well as some additional fun items. There is $10 suggested donations and proceeds will benefit the Rainbow Connection Animal Foundation.
BBC is, of course, showing a slew of Doctor Who related specials including marathons of each Doctor, but one thing that seems especially intriguing is The Science of Doctor Who with Brian Cox at 10p on Monday. Britain’s popular TV physicist, Professor Brian Cox explores the universe of the Time Lord, revealing the science behind the spectacle and explaining the physics that allows the Doctor to travel through space and time. It’s promised to be fun but and will give those fans with a thirst for understanding plenty of real science.
On the 21st at 12:30p, the Cleveland Art Museum will be doing a special Doctor Who themed Art Bites: Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey. Time-travel through the collections to depictions of places visited by the Doctor and his companions. The tour will be meeting in the atrium and will last 30 minutes. Expect to see some van Gogh paintings!
On the 23rd, starting at 2p, Every Bar in Lakewood will be hosting a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Watch Party for the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who, “The Day of the Doctor”, co-sponsored by GeekCLE and Hashtag Nerd. Join us at Mahall’s in the concert room to watch the show on their big screen. We will also be celebrating all things Doctor Who with a themed food and drink menu, geeky local craft vendors, GeekCLE Doctor Who Trivia, costume contest and really great prizes donated by several local businesses. Make sure to check out the event on Facebook for a complete list of donors and sponsors!
If you miss the World Premier on BBC at 2:50p, there will be an encore Primetime Broadcast at 10p.
For those of you inclined, you can see the event on the big screen in either 3D or standard in Cleveland Heights, Westlake, Strongsville, Valley View, Akron, or Hudson. There are additional theaters (and some not listed officially), you can see a full list here.
