Full disclosure and to use a classic term, I am a Marvel zombie. Even as a fan of comics in general reading DC books is a struggle for me. So, when New 52 started I considered it a bold yet cheap move to garner new readership. It also seemed like a sizeable F you to their established readers. To me DC’s opinion seems to be, “It’s not the history or continuity that matters, just the characters” and in that regard I feel they have little respect for much else. By much else I mean people and by people I mean creators and readers. What I’m trying to say is that to me New 52 appeared to simply be a cash grab so I didn’t bother to invest my time or hard earned dollars in lining Time Warner’s pockets. Sure, I may have been perviously biased but it failed to make a new reader out of me. That said, when the second wave of books happened (Earth 2, World’s Finest, Dial H, Batman Inc., G.I. Combat, and The Ravagers) I decided to give some of them a try because I am a rational person and they were more alinged with my interest. Simply put, I didn’t like them. I am reading the new Batman/Superman book which is only two issues in but it’s weird and doesn’t make much sense. It’s really pretty though. Is this what being new to comics feels like?
As a Marvel fan I am mostly enjoying Marvel NOW! For one I appreciate that it’s more of a rebranding. Despite the new #1’s the story lines continued from the previous volumes and continuity was maintained. I go back and forth between hating Superior Spider-man and being somewhat entertained by it. I love whats going on with the X-men and Avengers. Wolverine and his ability to be everywhere (which has kinda been explained) still annoy me and Captain America is a dick. With regards to the Avengers, I will actually say that Marvel Now! is a success because it has gotten me to enjoy and even anticipate new issues of books that I, even as a marvel fan, never had any interest in. I never cared for the Avengers and never really saw the point in them. Right before the rebranding I remember saying that the team should only deal with threats to the planet as a whole. Guess what the current story line is about. Also, all of the cool cosmic characters are getting some love.
I’m gonna stop here. For now…
