I was asked to write an article on what I’m currently playing but I thought that what I’m NOT playing needed to be discussed, as it may well be that a very important chapter in my gaming life might have come to a close. Perhaps you, you true believers, have experienced the same moment, or had the same epiphany that I did.
There was a dark moment 48 days, 5 hours, and 46 minutes ago when I contemplated quitting video games altogether. Something in that dark moment had shattered my desire to play video games. That something was FIFA 14.
Ever since Tecmo Bowl on the original Nintendo, I’ve spent countless hours learning and mastering various sports video games. Some of my favorites have been Super Tecmo Bowl, RBI Baseball 3, and Tecmo NBA Basketball-all on Nintendo, NCAA Football on the Playstation 2, and FIFA on the Xbox 360. My ability to recall full club or team line-ups and knowledge of rosters is derived from the video games I’ve played. Sports video games have always been a staple of my video game diet. The attraction to and the love I have of sports video games is the ability to take my favorite sport teams and mold them into dominating juggernauts that have no inkling as to what mercy is. Opponents are meaningless as they all suffer the same fate. Sports video games have always been my obsession because of the state of perfection that can be achieved. Something which cannot be mirrored in real life. And my passion for Football (soccer for Americans) only fed this obsession when I first got my hands on FIFA. I can’t recall another video game that has consistently dissolved hours of my life that perhaps totals in weeks, if not months when added together.
